Know & Nurture
Postpartum Doula care inspired by universal principles of support for the Mother rooted in physiological design, nourishment, and love
postpartum essential care:
-
nourish.
After the birth of baby and placenta, immediate hormonal changes begins the recalibration process from growing & birthing a baby to now nursing & helping your body recover.
Prioritizing nutrient dense, warm and easily digestible foods during the first few weeks is critical to help support pelvic recovery, to ease hormonal shifts, and to avoid depletion.
Fat soluble vitamins (A,D,K), minerals, proteins from pasture raised animals; gelatinous rich bone broths; cold- water, oily fish; liver; eggs are all foods that restore and nourish a Mother.
-
warmth.
Giving birth is incredibly strenuous on the body, no matter your birth experience. All birth requires the same recovery protocol to support the internal and external world of a new Mother.
It is important to keep a postpartum Mother warm internally through warming foods AND externally with items such a socks, robes, blankets, warm massage, foot soak etc. These warming properties will continue to help move stagnant blood & lymph which will help in cleansing and healing the body after birth.
Digestion is altered during pregnancy and birth. It is important to feed the body foods that are warm in nature and temperature to make it easier to digest and assimilate nutrients.
-
support & rest.
Uterine ligaments are stretched to max capacity during the last phase of pregnancy and through the delivery/ birth of baby. Rest is the most important way to support pelvic recovery and avoid prolapse.
For optimal healing, there is a saying that a Mother should spend 5 days in the bed, 5 days on the bed, and 5 days around the bed with an emphasis on laying horizontal, eating/drinking nourishing meals, and caring for baby (lots of skin to skin!).
Establishing a support system to relieve a Mother from day to day duties will allow her focus to be on establishing a breastfeeding relationship (baby’s lifeline) and keeping the stress hormones at bay while basking in oxytocin bliss with baby.
